ESEF (European Single Electronic Format)

Updated September 2026Finance Software Glossary

The European Single Electronic Format (ESEF) is the mandatory electronic reporting format for annual financial reports of companies listed on EU regulated markets. Reports must be prepared in XHTML and IFRS consolidated financial statements must be tagged with inline XBRL. The mandate applies to financial years starting on or after January 1, 2020.

ESEF comes from an ESMA regulation under the EU Transparency Directive. The annual financial report is published as a single XHTML document, and issuers that prepare IFRS consolidated financial statements tag the primary statements with inline XBRL using the ESEF taxonomy, which is based on the IFRS taxonomy. Block tagging of the notes was added for financial years beginning in 2022.

The mandate took effect for financial years beginning on or after January 1, 2020, though some member states allowed a one-year delay. In many jurisdictions auditors also check the tagging, so the ESEF package goes through review like the numbers themselves.

In software: Workiva and CCH Tagetik both offer ESEF tagging and filing inside their disclosure management suites. Specialists such as ParsePort and CtrlPrint handle ESEF conversion for companies that draft their reports elsewhere.
