Quota Attainment

Updated September 2026Finance Software Glossary

Quota attainment is the percentage of an assigned sales quota that a salesperson or team actually achieves in a period, calculated as closed sales divided by quota. A rep who closes $450,000 against a $500,000 quota has 90% attainment. It's the core measure of sales performance and drives commission payouts.

Attainment is tracked monthly, quarterly and annually, and it drives more than payouts. Plan design assumes a distribution of attainment across the team. If very few reps ever reach 100%, quotas are set too high or territories are unbalanced, and the plan loses its motivating effect.

Finance uses attainment data to accrue commission expense accurately during the close and to forecast full-year compensation cost. Attainment against a bookings quota can also differ from recognized revenue, which matters for accrual timing.

In software: SPM platforms such as Xactly, Varicent and CaptivateIQ show live attainment dashboards to reps and roll attainment up by team, region and plan for finance and sales leadership.
